Turns out… whatsoever we do
I thought he was stoned every time I saw him. Turns out his eyes were red from the ocean.
I thought he was joking about reading The Good Book. Turns out he walks his talk.
I thought he was just trying to get some girly action. Turns out it was me who begged to be wed, to him, forever.
We met working at a newly opened, uberly popular, Hard Rock Cafe.
Prior to our very first full staff meeting the group of us who had made the cut from a ridiculous number of applicants, those who had survived the rigorous training and daily pruning of the misfortunate, were given the opportunity to vote for the inaugural “Employee of the Quarter.”
He walks up to receive his token of appreciation and in front of us all he says,
The bible tells us…
whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men…
That’s what I do every time I walk through these doors.“
That’s the verse that changed my life forever because I saw the words alive and in action right before my eyes.
Turns out that, as cliche as it sounds, things aren’t always as they seem to be.
See, there’s a lot of living, a lot of circumstances, menial and mighty, wrapped up in “whatsoever.” Dirty dishes, housework, weekends at the office, sleepless nights with children, working jobs we don’t like surrounded by annoying people, navigating traffic, paying bills…. life, everyday living, it’s all “whatsoever” and we are encouraged to do, yes, even the lame, boring, frustrating things with all our hearts.
“Whatsoevers” are the building blocks of our lives.
Turns out that if we perform tasks in our lives with a heart of service and love for no other reason than to obey our Lord than ALL tasks are truly transformed.
